Request: List style - trim numbers/begin at a lower level

Hi,

I like the number ‘list style’ but end up using my bespoke system/checkboxes to track tasks / steps in a procedure.

The issue is numbers like 10.3.2.1.7.2 - see the screen cap at 2022-09-24_07-43-03 (ignore the black arrows).

Numbers of this length are pretty ungainly and awkward to reference (imagine asking someone to amend step number 10.3.2.1.7.2)

Is there any chance of deciding at what level the number should start - as opposed to starting at the list level? (asking someone to edit 10.2.3 would be so much simpler)

I have to confess I have no idea how hard this would be to program,
